To ask the Chief Executive how many dog fouling fines were issued in 2024 in the remit of
the Dun Laoghaire Area Committee?
Reply:
No fines were issued for dog fouling in 2024 in the remit of the DĂșn Laoghaire Area
Committee.
In order to issue a fine for dog fouling, the issuing officer must know the name and the address
of the dog owner. Unless the dog owner is witnessed failing to clean up after their dog, and
their identity and address is confirmed, a fine cannot be issued.
If there are reports of dog fouling in a specific area, the Dog Warden will be requested to
carry out dog license checks in the area and remind dog owners of their obligations under
both the Control of Dogs Act, 1986, as amended, and the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, as
amended.
The Environmental Awareness Section promotes the Green Dog Walker programme which
aims to raise awareness of the problem of dog fouling and arm dog owners with the tools to
ensure our parks, paths and beaches remain beautiful and safe for everyone. Additionally,
the Environmental Enforcement Wardens carried out 10 awareness patrols in 2024, in areas
popular with dog walkers, to remind owners of their obligations to clean up after their dogs.
