Old Stillorgan Road

MEETING OF DUN LAOGHAIRE AREA COMMITTEE

2ND OCTOBER 2006

Old Stillorgan Road

Question: Councillor M. Baker:

"To ask the Manager in relation to the Old Stillorgan Road to confirm if it is intended to include the following measures to improve traffic flow and aid local residents: –

(i) a three ton limit on this road. This will stop large vehicles from parking here;

(ii) designated parking bay for tour coaches;

(iii) directional arrows on the roadway to indicate that this road is two way. In particular on the section between Seafield and Fosterbrook;

(iv) inclusion of a left turning lane into Fosterbrook off the Old Stillorgan Road?"

Reply:

(i) Heavy Good Vehicles (HGVs) generally, do not travel along the Old Stillorgan Road. However, due to current roadworks on the Rock Road, it is possible that some trucks are re-routing their journeys.

Heavy Goods Vehicles are not parking on the Old Stillorgan Road. A three tonne weight restriction therefore is not recommended.

(ii) UCD (Belfield College Buses- Coaches) are currently parking on the Old Stillorgan Road and it is the intention of the Traffic Section of the Council to withdraw this parking facility for such coaches, since UCD Belfield Campus has space which can be developed for the parking of College Buses (Coaches)

(iii) ‘Two Way' directional signs and arrows on the road currently exist on the Old Stillorgan Road. The road will be examined to see if any additional lining and signage is required.

Currently some vehicles are being driven on the wrong side of the road to avoid the traffic queuing back from the traffic lights at the N11 junction and then turning left into Fosterbrook. This is a matter of Garda enforcement and the Traffic Section will inform the Garda Siochana.

(iv) There is adequate space for a short left turning lane into Fosterbrook. However, whether the installation of this short slip will adequately address vehicles bypassing the queue on the wrong side of the road is questionable. Traffic Section is monitoring the current situation and will liaise closely with An Garda Siochana to address.
