Wire Guards for Newly Planted Young Trees

Question: Councillor M. Baker:

"To ask the Manager why wire guards are not routinely placed around newly planted young trees to protect them from vandalism and breakage?"

Reply:

"The survival of newly planted trees depends on a number of factors

1.

Specification of species and size

2.

Choice of location

3.

Ground preparation, staking, watering and maintenance

4.

Protection (tree guards)

In most circumstances the first 3 criteria are adequate to ensure the establishment of trees and only as a last resort do we provide tree guards. Tree guards also add considerably to the cost of tree planting and would therefore not be cost effective if used on every tree."
