Meeting of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council 12 March 2007 Wire Guards for Newly Planted Young Trees |
Question: Councillor M. Baker: | ||
"To ask the Manager why wire guards are not routinely placed around newly planted young trees to protect them from vandalism and breakage?" |
Reply: |
"The survival of newly planted trees depends on a number of factors |
1. |
Specification of species and size |
2. |
Choice of location |
3. |
Ground preparation, staking, watering and maintenance |
4. |
Protection (tree guards) |
In most circumstances the first 3 criteria are adequate to ensure the establishment of trees and only as a last resort do we provide tree guards. Tree guards also add considerably to the cost of tree planting and would therefore not be cost effective if used on every tree." |
