To ask the Chief Executive to outline what Internet of things (IoT) projects the Council has
been involved in?
Reply:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects including devices with sensors
that connect and exchange data over the Internet. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is involved in a good number of pilots and projects which come under this banner.
Data gathering and analyses is vital to a modern progressive urban local authority.
dlr is intent on utilising advances in sensor and mesh networking technology to improve
data gathering and mitigate the need to connect disparate devices over costly SIM cards.
By progressing IoT projects dlr will be able to not only react to events as they unfold but to
anticipate events which may require Local Authority mobilisation.
Below listed are the IoT projects in which dlr is involved.
The Council has been involved in the following projects:
1. The SBIR IoT communication device challenge
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are part funding the development of a
communications device that will remove the need for a SIM card in low data devices
like the Big Belly Bins, EV Chargers and Street Lights.
2. ITRON Wi-Fi Mesh Dundrum
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling a low band width WiFi mesh
that will improve internet connectivity for the general public without the need for a
SIM card.
3. DenseAir improved mobile coverage in Sandyford Ind Est
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling of a low voltage mobile signal
booster that will improve mobile phone coverage for the general public in black spot
areas.
4. Ubiquia Wi-Fi in the Harbour
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling of a high band width WiFi mesh
that will improve internet connectivity for the general public in the Dun Laoghaire
Habour area without the need for a SIM card.
5. Wi-Fi in Dun Laoghaire Town
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are providing free public wifi in dlr Town
6. Wi-Fi in Marlay Park
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are providing free public wifi in Marlay Park
7. ReSure Traffic monitoring in Sandyford Ind Est
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling to monitor traffic in conjunction
with the Garda for criminal and anti-social activity.
8. Cignal improved mobile coverage Monkstown
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are providing a mobile signal booster that
will improve mobile phone coverage for the general public in the Monkstown black
spot area.
9. EV Charging mesh communications (see project 1 above)
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are installing Electric Vehicle Charging Units
to facilitating the residents and users of the county and mitigate the fuel used in the
county under our Climate Change Remit.
10. Harvard LeafNut smart CMS (Central Management System) for Street Lighting
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling a smart remote monitoring
installation on 70 of the street lights in Sandyford Industrial Estate and environs
11. Philips CitySense smart CMS for Street Lighting
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are trialling a smart remote monitoring
installation on 30 of the street lights in Sandyford Industrial Estate and N11
12. Streetlightvision smart CMS for Street Lighting
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council have installed a smart remote monitoring
installation in 7 locations for 300 of the street lights across the entire county.
13. RF Mesh countywide
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is installing Smart cells to provide
countywide low-bandwidth RF mesh connectivity that will remove the need for a SIM
card in low data devices like the Big Belly Bins, EV Chargers and Street Lights.
14. Smart Bin System
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council provides the litter bin service using smart
bin technology. This has been in place since 2015, with operatives being alerted
when bins need collection using apps on smart phones.
15. GPS Vehicle Tracking
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council uses GPS tracking of all fleet for remote
monitoring of fleet efficiency and delivery of improvements.
